Khaya
In 2001, the Summerstrand Cheshire Home realised the need to look beyond its existing services to explore new boundaries and to reach out to disabled children in the Walmer Township.
For 6 years we transported 12 severely physically and mentally disabled children from the Township to the Home, where we fed, clothed and provided them with food parcels.
We also taught their carers hobbies and home skills.
During those years we lost 3 children to HIV related illnesses.
During 2006, we located a tract of land that belongs to Jerusalem Ministries and is situated along Victoria Drive, Walmer.
It was there that we built a double-garage sized centre for our children.
Today we run a fully operational daycare centre for some 20 children from the local township.
Khaya Cheshire is a great success story.
We employ four staff members there, have our own vehicle and have a well run project that receives no Government funding whatsoever.
Through the goodness of the local community, we operate extremely cost effectively.
Our children come from very poor homes and we endeavour to do as much as we can to assist their families.
In so doing, we strive to impact positively on the extended family.
